The sensors integrated into mobile devices have as main goal the gathering of important information for the operation in general. It is designed for certain applications and ultimately, the operating system. We do not know or see, but within a smartphone or tablet can coexist more than a dozen sensors. As we already know, this sensor allows us to measure the number of steps we have taken throughout the day. While this operation can be emulated by the accelerometer, the truth is that a pedometer is much more accurate, especially when it comes to counting the number of steps at the time of running.
It is in charge of knowing the orientation of the device. It is a small size element which is mainly made of silicon. In the case of electronic devices, it emulates small tubes with springs and balls making the dough in each of the three axes of coordinates (the famous X, Y, and Z), so that when we move the device, the balls compress or expand the springs to define the position. Thus, for example, the screen is rotated automatically in the event that we enable the option.
The accelerometer is not the only element that allows a device to know its position and maintain it. For this, there is also a gyroscope, an element that allows changing or maintains the orientation. This helps the device to obtain much more complete information on the position of the device.
By definition, a magnetometer measures the strength or direction of a magnetic signal. Now, how does this affect a device? Most use it as a compass, detecting the magnetic north pole of our planet to define where the geographic North Pole is located. However, they are also used for the famous smart cases that lock phones and tablets automatically when they are closed.
Light and proximity sensors:
The first of them allows us to know what amount of light is affecting our device, something really useful for the screen to change the brightness automatically, converting this amount of light into an electrical signal “understandable” by the device.
On the other hand, the proximity is using to turn off the screen once we are talking on the phone because the infrared light that emits “returns” by our ear. However, it also serves to lock the phone automatically if we put it in our pockets.
It was one of the great innovations of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and allows us to know at all times the risk to our skin exposed to sunlight. Only a few seconds are enough and the sensor “looking” at the sun to know if we should throw cream or get away from the light.
Present in many new generation devices, this sensor allows to control certain household devices such as televisions or air conditioners, acting as a command when we need it – yes, much smarter than usual.
Heart rate sensor:
As its name suggests, it allows us to know the pulsations of our heart. In addition, according to the terminal, it allows us to know the stress that our body suffers at that moment and, for example, the oxygen level in our blood.
This sensor is one of the great innovations that Apple introduced with the iPhone 5. With the fingerprint, a smartphone can be locked, unlocked, allow electronic payments, and much more. In short, it increases the security of the device to avoid the access by unknown persons.
