Ediga or Idiga is a prominent Hindu community which primarily have people concentrated in South Central areas of Karnataka. Since ancient days Idigas are involved in making medicines and are classified as Somavanshi Kshatriyas. In many parts of Karnataka they are also called deevaru which means islanders. They main profession is brewing but very few carry on with their traditional job. In some areas of south coast Karnataka the Ediga community is influenced by the teachings of their Narayana Guru. The followers of the Guru have many ashrams in Karnataka. There are many associations and unions which are associated with teaching of such Guru. Ediga community is considered as the fourth positioning state in terms of population which this community has attained politically, financially, socially and on religious progression. Ediga community have built many sanghas and associations by many elderly people of this community who have influnced many Edigas to join the groups and communities.
