Mappila or rather famous as Muslim Mapille or Janakam is a member of the largest Muslim State of Kerala.This community arose primarily as a result of pre and post Islamic Arab contact.Mapillas chiefly resides in the Malabar region. The Mapilla matrimony highlights the basic rituals followed by these people at the time of marriage.These people mainly follow the basic Muslim norms of marriage.The wedding day starts by bathing both the bride and the groom in a paste of sandal and cumin thus making herpure and sacred for the wedding.She is made to wear a traditional yellow saree. At least the presence of 4 married women during this occasion is mandatory.The wedding ceremony or the nikkah is held at the auspicious time or better known as the "mahuratam". During this auspicious ceremony, the bride and the groom sit opposite to each other in a small stage surrounded by their respective family members and other prominent personalities. They are not allowed to see each other's faces so the bride and the groom's face are covered by a piece of cloth and flower chains respectively. At the arrival of the auspicious moment the "peer" or the priest arrives, people welcome him heartily as he is considered a very respectful person among the people of this community. After his arrival he starts reciting a few verses from the holy "quaran", the most sacred book of the Muslims. After completion of this recitation the priest asks both the bride and the groom that whether they accept each other or not three times .If they say yes three times then they get married.
