The Nayaka is the Valmiki community in Karnataka. They are largely a Hindu community with two sub castes - Ura Nayaka and Myasa Nayaka. Ura Nayaka are people living in Cities while the people living in the forest are Myasa Nayaka. The marriage rituals are same as celebrated in Hinduism influenced by rituals based on the region they settled. The wedding is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm where everybody is dressed in expensive bright color dresses. The Nayaka brides wear a beautiful sari with 'moggina jade' - her long hair is adorned with flowers. In a traditional Kannada wedding, the bride is dressed in a 9 yard sari called a navari. This sari is usually made of silk which is accompanied by jewelry and bangles. The groom wears dhoti, a pheta, and a turban. A stick is handed to the groom to carry in his right hand. The groom's family gives the bride gifts like a sari, blouse piece, fruits and coconut while the groom is given a dhoti, fruits and coconut. First invitation is presented to the deity and Nandi ritual is conducted before the wedding. Havan or another ritual takes place on the wedding day to ensure blessings for the wedding. Several other rituals like Kaashi yatre and Dev Karya, Haldi are performed uddin murth is ground. Mandap is decorated and Jaimala - exchange of garlands takes place while the bride's face is covered with the peacock feathers. Dhare Hedu, Saptpadi the actual wedding ceremony takes place followed by other post wedding rituals.
