Vannar is a Tamil Dhobi (whasherman) caste. Other names for the community include Salavai thozhilale, Vannan, Panicker, etc. However, in today's time, the men and women of the caste are educated and holding prominent positions in many industries. Once marriage is arranged in the caste; the parents of potential bride and groom meet and exchange horoscopes. The horoscope is assessed by the family priest. Writing of the marriage agreement is an integral part of a Vannar marriage ceremony. The agreement is put on a plate with coconuts, bananas, and betel leaf. On the day of wedding, the bride is given an oil bath with sesame oil. She also gets a green sari which she wears with red and green bangles. The mother of bride presents her the dowry. Post wedding morning bathing ritual, the bride must stay in the house until the wedding. Vannar brides are smeared with oil and haldi on the day of wedding. Their body is also smeared with sandalwood. Thereafter, they are bathed in rose water and purified water. Brides from Vannar community wear light makeup and wear a lot of jewellery made in gold decorating each part of her body. Their hair is braided long and decorated with jewellery and flowers. The traditional Kanjeevaram saree is preferred for brides of this community. The six yard saree is of green colour with golden and red coloured border. Brides are presented with a mangalsutra in yellow thread by their husbands on the day of wedding.
