The Maruthuvar caste belongs to Tamilnadu and Kerala state of India. They are also found in other states of South India. When there was monarchism in India, they were doctors to the king. Apart from treating kings and other people, they also knew hair cutting which was meant for treating any diseases related to head. When the kings received wounds in their head, the "Maruthuvars" removed hairs from the wounded area. When medical science arrived in India, people no more searched treatment from this community. So this community started doing the job of cutting hairs of people too. Hair cutting was the job of Navidars and Government joined "Navidhar" to "Maruthuvar" and these two communities enjoyed the same status. Though they are not of same status they are being considered as same. In Kerala this community is known as "Ezhavas" who were basically Medicine practitioners in older days. Ezhavas practiced Ayurvedic medicine in India and especially they treated the kings in Kerala too. They are also known in different names such as Vaidyars, or Vaitiyars or Pandits Maruthuvar in different parts of South India. In Kerala, Ezhavas may share a common heritage with the Nair caste. The rituals and customs of Maruthuvar are more similar to that of Nairs. Especially their matrimonial ceremonies follow the rituals of Nair caste of Kerala. They are quite religious and follow all the Vedic pattern of customs in their wedding ceremony. The Maruthuvar brides dress almost the same way a Nair bride is adorned. Their other customs of marriage too is similar with that of a Nair marriage to a great extent.
