Maruthuvars, also known as Nassuvars, Navidars, Ambattars are a subcategory of Hindus. Traditionally they were associated with the role of barbers. They were present in every village and they helped people by cutting their long hair, shaving them (those were not the days of self shaving) etc. They were doing an important service to the society without which no one can confidently claim they are beautiful. Hence, this community was well needed and respected for its hard work and artistic abilities, because hair styling is an important aspect of this. Today, Maruthuvars are living in large numbers in Tamil Nadu state. They are also present in smaller numbers in other neighboring states. Most of the Maruthuvars are keeping the tradition and performing the same role, mainly acting as village barbers, while others in the new generation have gone to schools, colleges, showing their educational skills, earning a good mark, getting top jobs in small and large corporations, raising in their chosen fields. Some even start their own businesses. Whatever they are doing as a full time job, they show top quality and hard work which earns a huge respect in their field. Maruthuvar matrimony starts when a parent decides that his / her son or daughter is ready for marriage, preparing a profile. This profile is then distributed to many in the community by manual means or by using an online website. This is then filtered by families who are looking for suitable matches for their own son or daughter. Once both families feel the match is good, they meet and discuss the next steps such as marriage plans which happen as per the Maruthuvar tradition.
