The Vanjari community is basically found in Maharashtra. They are found throughout the country but a large number of people from this community are foundin Maharashtra. They are found in certain parts of south India too. In different parts of Andhra Pradesh also this community is seen. The Vanjari caste is generally classified under the trader community. The word has been derived from "vanijya" which means trade and commerce. Their major occupation is doing business in different sectors. They have their own culture and tradition. They prefer to stay bound by their own culture. Their matrimonial tradition is too different from other business community. Marriages in this community are held usually in the rainy season. Marriage is forbidden to this community in dry weather because in the dry weather they are usually traveling and doing business. The Wedding ceremony of this community takes place in the manner of the Hindu custom only. Some of the customs followed in Vanjari community does notbelong to Hindu customs. Some of the window marriage customs and other customs of divorce are not similar with that of Hinduism. Vanjari grooms have to pay the bride-price which is generally decided with the consent of the panchayat. The marriage ceremony is quite unique to them. Though they belong to Hinduism and practice Hindu religion, their marriage customs vary from the Hindu marriage customs in different aspects. They prefer to marry within their community only. They follow every custom of their community and especially marriages are accomplished according to the vanjari customs.
