Vaniyas, also known as Vaniya Chettiyars are a subcategory of Hindus. They are primarily living in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The term "Vaniya" actually means "Vaaniga" which is "Trade". As the name suggests, these people are expert in trade. They learn the art of trading from a very young age, and they make sure they extract value from every rupee they are investing in their business. They are known to run successful shops in cities and villages. This gives them the social respect. Today, Vaniyas are running similar shops like grocery stores performing their traditional roles. Their young generation goes to schools, colleges to study basics and get great marks, degrees. However, aftger getting the required basic education, most of them return to their family business as that is seen as a good option as well as their duty. Some of them go to jobs in government and private organizations. Some even start new businesses in the family tradition. In all these jobs, they are able to bring the same careful eye and the attitude so that they effectively take care of anything assigned to them. This is one of the primary reasons why they are respected as excellent employees and leaders. Vaniya matrimony starts when a parent decides that his or her son / daughter is ready for marriage, preparing a proposal. It is then distributed to many others to spread the news around. When it reaches another family which is looking for a suitable match to their son or daughter, they contact this family and a discussion starts. Based on that the marriage plans are made.
